Gold Label® Virgin Coconut Oil Review

Tropical Traditions is your one-stop shop for virgin coconut oil. They are based in the Philippines and run by a family that wanted to better the way coconut oil was produced. He and his wife loved using coconut oil for various things and wanted the most natural they could get for their families health. His wife taught him the time-honored traditional process and it escalated to them being the first ones to export Virgin Coconut Oil from the Philippines to the US!

Did you know there are hundreds of uses for coconut oil?!?! Danggggg. I won’t go through them all, but it’s fascinating to know how many things can be substituted for something much more healthy, and probably less expensive in some instances, too. Tropical Traditions has graciously given me a 32oz jar of their famous Gold Label® Virgin Coconut Oil to review. I decided to use it in a few different ways, and search even further for other common (and not so common) uses for our sweet smelling sample of slippery goodness.

First, I tried it in my hair. This was the useprocess I was most fascinated with! It is an all-natural hair mask that is so simple, yet makes such a big difference. Warm the oil up until it is close to the consistency of conditioner, and massage your scalp. Rub the oil from your roots out to the ends of your hair, then leave it for as long as you feel it needs nourishment. I left it in my hair  for ten minutes one time, and fifteen minutes the next week. My hair is incredible after using this! It is soft and shiny, but it isn’t greasy like some masks or conditioner can make it. Give it a go and see what it can do for you!


After that I tried a veryyyy simple body scrub recipe: Sugar and coconut oil.  You want 1 part oil to 2 parts sugar (or salt), and you can add a few drops of your favorite scented oil to give it that little take-me-away extra 😉 Talk about amazing exfoliation. This is going to save me money and will be really helpful when I’m craving a spa day.


Lastly, I wanted to cook with it—I’ve heard wonders about cooking with coconut oil and wanted to give it a shot. I decided on something simple again: Banana Chips! Yummmmm. You can either bake them or fry them, and for the sake of testing out the oil I fried them. I got the recipe for the banana chips here.

They turned out pretty well…the second time. I’m no cooking pro, so it took a burnt batch to figure it out. Yummy though My boyfriend thinks they are pretty tasty and glad I tried something new. SCORE! The only downside is that I DO NOT like the smell. At all. The whole kitchen was dowsed and Kristyn came in, turned around and walked right back out. So she’s not a big coconut oil smell person either, apparently. I don’t feel quite so weird now…

Overall I really enjoyed testing out the oil and will definitely be trying some if it’s other uses. You can make toothpaste, use as a skin moisturizer, diffuse the itching of a bug bite, and mix with garlic oil to get rid of swimmers ear. I’ve also been told that it is a great natural way to rid one of lice—which is a nice alternative to a bunch of crazy chemicals. The possibilities are endless!
