How to Turn a Garden Shed into a Gym

Transforming a garden shed into a home gym is one of the most rewarding ways to reclaim backyard space. Whether you’re tired of crowded fitness centers or simply want the convenience of working out steps from your back door, a shed gym offers privacy, flexibility, and motivation to stay active all year round.

In New Zealand, where weather can be unpredictable and travel time adds up quickly, having your own workout space makes both practical and financial sense. Here’s a step-by-step guide to turning that humble garden shed into a high-performing fitness haven.

1. Assess the Size and Structure

Not all sheds are created equal. Before you start hauling in equipment, take a good look at the space.

  • Ceiling Height: Ensure there’s enough clearance for overhead movements, especially if you plan to install a pull-up bar or do weightlifting.
  • Floor Space: Think about your workout style—do you need room for cardio equipment, yoga, or strength training?
  • Structural Integrity: Check for leaks, rot, or instability. You may need to reinforce the frame or replace some panels before converting it into a gym.

My brother-in-law in Nelson converted a standard 3x3m timber shed into a home gym, and with some smart layout decisions, he managed to fit a bench, squat rack, and rowing machine comfortably.

2. Insulate and Weatherproof

A comfortable workout space needs to be usable year-round. In most parts of New Zealand, that means insulating your shed and sealing any drafts or leaks.

  • Insulation: Foam board or batt insulation will help regulate temperature.
  • Flooring: Rubber mats or interlocking gym tiles protect the floor and provide shock absorption.
  • Ventilation: A vent or window is essential for airflow and preventing dampness.

You might also want to consider a small heater for winter mornings or a fan for summer sessions.

3. Install Proper Flooring

Flooring is crucial for safety, comfort, and equipment longevity. Concrete floors can damage equipment and are uncomfortable for high-impact workouts.

  • Rubber gym tiles: Easy to install and perfect for absorbing impact.
  • Plywood base with foam padding: A budget-friendly DIY solution.
  • Raised platforms: Useful if you plan on doing Olympic lifts or heavy squats.

My own garden shed gym uses recycled rubber mats from a commercial gym closure—a cost-effective way to get professional-grade flooring.

4. Power and Lighting

If you’re going to spend serious time in your gym shed, proper lighting and power are must-haves.

  • Lighting: LED strip lights are energy-efficient and provide bright, even lighting.
  • Power outlets: You’ll need these for running machines like treadmills or even just charging your Bluetooth speaker.

For safety, it’s worth hiring a qualified electrician to wire the shed professionally, especially if you’re installing heavy-duty equipment.

5. Choose Your Equipment Wisely

Here’s where your gym truly comes to life. The equipment you choose should reflect your goals and available space.

  • Compact cardio machines: A spin bike or rowing machine offers a great workout in minimal space.
  • Strength gear: A folding squat rack, adjustable bench, and a set of dumbbells or kettlebells go a long way.
  • Multipurpose tools: Resistance bands, a yoga mat, and a stability ball are versatile and space-saving.

If you’re short on space, wall-mounted storage for weights and accessories can keep everything tidy and accessible.

6. Add a Personal Touch

The beauty of a garden shed gym is that it’s yours. Make it a place you look forward to visiting.

  • Mirrors: Great for checking form and making the space feel bigger.
  • Bluetooth speakers or TV: For workout playlists or following along with online classes.
  • Motivational decor: A whiteboard with goals, posters, or a clock can add to the gym vibe.

One Wellington couple I know installed full-length mirrors and mounted an iPad on the wall to follow along with their Les Mills workouts—it gave their small space a true studio feel.

7. Safety and Maintenance

Finally, ensure that your garden gym is a safe, well-maintained space.

  • Keep it clean: Regularly wipe down equipment and sweep the floors.
  • Check for wear and tear: Especially on cables, rubber mats, and moving parts.
  • Fire safety: Install a smoke alarm and avoid overloading power outlets.

Final Thoughts

Turning a garden shed into a gym is an achievable and incredibly rewarding project. It offers convenience, privacy, and a custom workout environment without the ongoing costs of a gym membership. Whether you’re after a quiet yoga retreat or a full-body strength training hub, your shed can become the ultimate fitness destination—right in your own backyard.
