“If music be the food of love, play on,” so one famous Shakespearean quote goes — but where exactly should you play this music? You and your beloved could be understandably indecisive on the matter — but the two of you certainly don’t have to be left short of choice.
In fact, the UK has plenty of secluded corners where you can embrace intimate snuggles with your significant other. Here are just some of the British places you might want to consider for your next loved-up getaway.
Bath
You have probably already seen the sumptuous Georgian-era architecture of this Somerset city pop up in quite a few screen adaptations of Jane Austen novels — one reason being that the writer herself was a resident of Bath from 1801 to 1806.
You could enjoy sharing a hot air balloon with your partner as you take an airborne trip above Bath’s breathtaking crescents — but if you would prefer something a little more down to earth (ha!), why not learn the story of Austen’s Bath life by paying a visit to the Jane Austen Centre at 40 Gay Street?
The New Forest
It might not be very new anymore, having even served as a royal hunting ground for the 11th-century monarch William the Conqueror, but the New Forest is a forest all right.
Condé Nast Traveller enthuses that, today, “the New Forest’s idyllic scenery remains unchanged, its ancient forest unfurling into a fairytale-like tapestry of marshland, heath and coast.”
With more than a hundred miles of walking and cycling trails here, you can look forward to walking arm in arm (or, yes, cycling!) with your partner while taking in the magical atmosphere.
North York Moors
This massive expanse of heather moorland has been a National Park since 1952 — and brought joy to successive generations of couples since then. It’s hardly a surprise, either, given the area’s blooming pink-and-purple florals and picture-book towns.
If you need to book somewhere to stay within easy travelling distance of these sights, you might want to consider one of the holiday cottages in Bridlington — a Yorkshire seaside town also less than 35 miles away from both York and Hull. So, when you fancy a more city-like experience…
Northumberland
You’re probably already picturing the stunning, imposing structure of Bamburgh Castle and the remnants of the Roman-era fortification Hadrian’s Wall. Indeed, if you and your sweetheart share a passion for history, the two of you will be in your element!
However, Northumberland also warrants a mention due to its quaint pubs dotted along the east coast, where you can tuck into fresh seafood thanks to the efforts of local fishermen.
Edinburgh
Are you busily planning your wedding and wondering what you will be doing straight after the nuptials? The Mirror notes: “The Scottish capital has long drawn in honeymooners from around the world thanks to its beautiful surroundings, local cuisine and eye-catching landmarks.”
There’s something for everyone in ‘Auld Reekie’, from history (it’s hard not to spot Edinburgh Castle while in the city) to traditional Scottish cuisine.
